Day 5

1 Kings 17:1-24

A widow of Zarephath who was close to death due to poverty, could not provide for her family.  Yet she opened her pantry and her home to homeless Elijah.  What was the result?

When have you said to yourself that you cannot afford to be generous?  When have you given to others in need and found yourself to be blessed as a result?

  1. On of my personal commitments for the Lenten Compact is to regularly share food with a person who is homeless. On my way to work each day, I pass at least one corner where a person is holding a sign that says, “Homeless. Please Help. God Bless,” so I have had no trouble getting rid of my oranges. Yesterday, I met a young man named Michael. Since I hadn’t seen him on this particular corner for a while, I asked him where he had been. His response was interesting. He said, “Since I’m the youngest, I get pushed around. If somebody else wants this corner, I have to find another place.” I asked him how old he was. He is 24 years old. When I responded that he was way too young to be out on the street, he confessed, “I really f***ed up my life.” He sounded like the proverbial prodigal son. Michael is one of the lost sons God loves. I’m praying he finds his way home.
