Who do you think “the hungry” are in this passage? Who are “the hungry” in your community? How does one go about sharing their food? What organizations in your community have a mission to distribute food to the hungry? How could you support their efforts?
During the months of February and March, Kimball Avenue Church will be contributing a portion of the Sunday offerings GROWING POWER, BREAD FOR THE WORLD and OXFAM. Check out what they are doing locally, nationally and globally to reduce hunger and increase food independence. And meet the Herman family in California who is following a similar fast during Lent and blogging about their experience.
Today is Valentine’s Day, often celebrated by eating out and giving candy. These activities are usually out of reach for those who feed themselves and their families on a SNAP budget. How could you express your love this year without the food factor?
Thanks for linking to us! I don’t know how many SNAP recipients use their benefits as their entire food budget vs. only a portion of their food budget (that is, as a true supplement). My hunch is that people who buy expensive essentials such as diapers may be using their SNAP benefit as their entire food budget. Our church has a food closet, which is utilized mainly by working people who have a vehicle (though some homeless people too). As we get closer to the end of the month when more people need emergency food, we plan to meet some of these folks as they’re waiting in line and ask them this sort of question…

As I was considering this passage, I believe “the hungry” are more than just individuals who don’t have enough to eat each day. It seems to me that “the hungry”, like “the widows, the orphans, and the alien and stranger”, are more like a class of people who live at the fringes of society or who suffer chronic food insecurity or food scarcity. This helps to identify who we should share our food with today. In the US, it would seem that those living at or below the poverty line would constitute “the hungry”. Globally, just about everyone in the 2/3 world would qualify. While I cannot send food directly to the hungry in the 2/3 world, I can (and should) advocate for more food aid from the US and the United Nations and support organizations that are working to aleviate hunger and build a sustainable food supply. No one should die of starvation in a world of plenty.
